Volunteer at The Shalala

Hello Shalalans, Volunteering Is Sexy!

Our time on playa is quickly approaching and we know everyone is excited to be there. In order for The Shalala to run smoothly it's imperative that we get all volunteer shifts filled as soon as possible - and that you show up for your shifts in a capacity to complete your duties safely! Please complete the Sign Up Form below to select the shifts you want to volunteer for. And then add them to your personal calendar so you don't forget! We have provided a calendar here as a reminder, and a list of the shifts for each camp member so you can see which shifts you have signed up for. Use the control buttons at the top right of the calendar to change dates or modify views to see all of the shifts.

We know Burning Man has a lot to experience but you must prioritize your shifts to help keep our camp functioning. We all benefit from living in The Shalala so we all must share the responsibilities required for us to have such incredible opportunities on playa. Although this take a little of your time away from exploring BRC, shifts are meant to build camp camaraderie and can be a lot of fun too.

If you have any questions, please reach out to us in the WhatsApp group chat or in private message. Thank you.

Before selecting your shifts please read these notes:

- You can only signup for shifts AFTER you have paid you camp dues deposit at minimum. If you have paid your deposit (or dues in full) and don't see your name available for shifts, please send us a message in WhatsApp.

- Given the size of our camp, everyone will need to volunteer 8-10 hours between the kitchen and bar. We ask everyone to select at least 2 kitchen shifts, although more is always better since a properly run kitchen is essential for us to stay nourished (and sane) during Burn Week. Once the shift teams are established, please feel free to connect with each other directly to set proper expectations and figure out how each of you might best work together to serve our community.

- Kitchen Leads (3 hour shift): You will be responsible for organizing the meal plan and ensuring food and dining hall is ready by mealtime. We will help you in advance to make sure all necessary food items are purchased before we arrive on playa. The Lead is also responsible for making sure the kitchen is properly cleaned and organized for the next meal. We know this is an important role so you will get help from other campmates before and after the meal.

- Kitchen prep/service (1.5 hour shift): You will help the Lead with all meal prep and cooking as needed. Please be aware of the allergies you need to accommodate for and WASH YOUR HANDS often. Try to clean as you go when possible. You may also need to setup the dining area to get ready for mealtime, and then you get to serve and enjoy a delicious meal with your fellow campmates.

- Kitchen cleanup (1.5 hour shift): You will be responsible for cleaning up after the meal so we encourage arriving on-time so you can begin cleanup shortly after the meal is served. Duties include cleaning/disinfecting all surfaces and appliances in the kitchen area, along with the washing, sanitizing, and rinsing of all camp pots, pans, utensils, and serving dishes. Once clean, let them air dry. (Camp members are responsible for washing their own dishes without disrupting the kitchen volunteers). Cleanup also requires that you properly consolidate food, label it, and move it to the communal fridge for after-hour delights. Before ending your shift, please ensure all kitchen waste is properly sorted/disposed of, and leave the kitchen in better condition than how you found it.

- Bar (2 hour shift): You will be responsible for safely serving drinks to others during our events. Depending on your shift times you may also be responsible for bar setup or cleanup, and we will provide all instructions for this in advance. All shifts will be a ton of fun and can be done by anyone regardless of bartending experience. These shifts are a fantastic way to connect with other Burners, just be sure you always check IDs to ensure the person you are serving is at least 21 years old.

- Strike (4 hour shift): We can't stress this enough... ALL camp members must help with strike. Even if you aren't going to be on playa after the Temple burns, we need you to contribute to the cleanup efforts in camp. This may include the cleaning/organizing of camp infrastructure and MOOP sweeps - and everyone is expected to leave playa with at least one bag of camp trash (in addition to all of your own personal trash and gear.) If you are leaving early and know you are not going to be available to do the heavy lifting and deconstruction after the Burn, please connect with a camp lead to see how you can best help The Shalala while you are on playa.
